  • The robber has gotten away with thousands of dollars worth of jewelry and watches
  • The NYPD released surveillance video of a suspect on Friday

Police have released surveillance video of a man they say has been robbing homes in the Bronx -- and claiming to be a police officer when caught in the act.

At least two people said they’ve been robbed by the thief, who police think has been getting into homes in North Riverdale through unlocked windows.

“I think he’s a very sloppy thief,” Robert Sosa said.

Robert Sosa was out walking his dog last month when the robber allegedly snuck into his apartment. When Sosa returned home, he says the suspect was inside his apartment. He tried to claim he was a DEA agent when Sosa confronted him.

“I walked up to him and he kind of poked his head out and said, ‘Yo.’ And I kind of froze in place, like ‘Who the hell are you?’ And he was pretty much just like, ‘I’m drug enforcement. We’re investigating drugs in this apartment.’”

Sosa says the man spoke into a walkie-talkie before rushing out. He got away with watches and jewelry worth hundreds of dollars.

Caroline Ravelo said the same thing happened to her in September. She says she came home to her apartment and the man was inside holding her purse.

“When I saw him, he said, ‘Who are you?’ Then I said, ‘No, who are you?’ Then he said, ‘I’m a police man.’”

Ravelo said she didn’t believe his story and she grabbed for her purse, but he ran off, along with nearly $3,000 worth of jewelry.

The NYPD asks anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
