Two New York state lawmakers say the state should require all of its contractors to publicly disclose whether they pay employees differently based on their gender, race or ethnicity.
Sen. Brad Hoylman and Assemblywoman Deborah Glick announced their proposal on Tuesday. The two Democrats say they'll push to pass the legislation when lawmakers reconvene in Albany in January.
Glick says New York could "shine a spot light" on wage discrimination by requiring anyone doing business with the state to report the information.
In New York full-time female workers are paid 86 cents for every dollar earned by a male employee. African-American and Hispanic women make even less when compared to their male counterparts.
Small businesses with state contracts would be exempted from the proposed requirement.
