NJ Police Chase Ends With Car Driving Into House

A Brooklyn driver who ran a red light led police on a car chase through the streets of Paramus, New Jersey, before crashing into a house early Saturday, officials said.

A police sergeant pulled over the 25-year-old Marlon Vancooten shortly after 4:30 a.m., after observing his vehicle running a red light, according to Saddle Brook police. Vancooten sped off once the sergeant exited her car, and she chased him until he eventually crashed into a home on Spring Valley Road.

Vancooten attempted to run, but was captured by an officer and arrested on a charge of eluding with a substantial risk of injury, police said. The vehicle went up in flames.

Officers found gift cards and other merchandise in the vehicle, and police were investigating whether they were purchased legally, police said. A female passenger was questioned by police and then released.

Vancooten was being held in Bergen County Jail on $50,000 bail. It wasn't immediately clear if he had a lawyer who could comment on the charges.
