Man Who Jumps on Hood of Car Dies After Driver Speeds Off: NYPD

A man who jumped on the hood of a car after following it out of a Staten Island parking lot died after the driver sped off, throwing the man off the vehicle, police said.

Robert Kunz, 24, followed a 2014 Audi sedan out of a parking lot on Veterans Road West in Charleston at about 6:30 p.m. Monday, authorities said. While the car was stopped at a light at Tyrellan Avenue, Kunz jumped on the hood of the car and the windshield, clinging to the car, the NYPD said.

The driver, 22-year-old Robert Messina, sped off on Veterans Road and maneuvered to the right, throwing Kunz onto the road, police said.

Kunz was taken to Staten Island University Hospital South, where he was pronounced dead.

Messina fled the scene, but returned some time later, police said. He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and aggravated unlicensed operator.

It wasn’t immediately clear if he had an attorney.

Police did not say why Kunz jumped onto the car.
