2nd Man Dies After Being Pulled From S.I. Pool Last Week

Another man has died after he and his friend were pulled unconscious from  the bottom of a Staten Island pool last week.

Jonathan Proce of Staten Island, 21, died with his family by his side Sunday morning at Richmond University Medical Center, the medical examiner confirms. Bohdan Vitenko of Manhattan, also 21, died en route to the hospital last Wednesday after the pair was discovered at the pool's bottom.

Proce, who was an off-duty city lifeguard, had been listed in critical condition since the incident.

The men, described as being in good physical shape, were conducting breathing exercises as part of some training for the military, according to the Staten Island Advance.

An associate pastor at Proce's family's church told the Post the young man wanted to join the Air Force Pararescue team.

Swimmers found the men in a 3-foot deep area of the pool after “adult lap swim” ended at about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, the Advance said.

Both men went into cardiac arrest after they were pulled from the water.

The pool was crowded when the incident happened, witnesses told the Advance. It wasn’t immediately clear how many lifeguards were on duty at the time.
