Long Island Trio Arrested After 40 Pounds of Heroin Seized

Federal agents have arrested three Long Islanders in connection with the seizure of nearly 40 pounds of heroin shipped to a couple's home from Guatemala.

Newsday says Omar Valera-Martinez, Christian Guzman and Tracy Suarez-Cruz were charged Wednesday with conspiracy to import heroin into the United States.

Officials say agents with the Department of Homeland Security and the Drug Enforcement Administration tracked the heroin shipment from Guatemala to the Westbury home of Suarez-Cruz and Guzman.

The drugs were concealed in 240 plastic bags labeled "coffee" that were shipped through a DHL courier facility in Ohio.

Customs officers discovered "an off-white, tannish powdery substance" in the shipment that tested positive for heroin.

The three face life in prison if convicted. Their lawyers either declined comment or couldn't be reached.
