Lawsuit: Cops Stopped Man 21 Times in Subway

Man allegedly singled out for looking Middle Eastern

The New York Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit on behalf of a New Yorker of South Asian descent.

The man says he's been unfairly stopped 21 times and searched by police in the subway.

Jangir Sultan says he was singled out because he has dark eyes and brown skin and appears to be Middle Eastern, though he is of Kashmiri descent.

The 32-year-old, Brooklyn-born occupational therapist says his problems started after New York City tightened its subway security in response to the 2005 transit bombings in London.

The city law department says the program is important and enhances the safety of millions of New Yorkers. It says the NYPD conducts the searches without regard for race or ethnicity.
