NJ Workers Suffer Exposure at Industrial Park

A carbon dioxide leak in a building's refrigeration system sickened 34 workers at the Lakewood Industrial Park, authorities say

Authorities say more than thirty people have been taken to the hospital following exposure to chemicals at an industrial park in central New Jersey.

Fire officials tell The Asbury Park Press that a carbon dioxide leak in a building's refrigeration system sickened 34 workers at the Lakewood Industrial Park on Thursday.

Fire Chief Todd Stark says the leak happened at Cuisine Innovations, a company within the industrial park which produces frozen foods. Stark says both carbon dioxide and nitrogen, which the company uses to process and freeze foods, leaked into a processing room.

Several workers complained of being light-headed or short of breath.

Conditions of the hospitalized workers were not immediately available.

Officials say the building is closed while a technician works to locate the leak's source.
