Animal Amnesty Event Brings in 3 Alligators, 8 Turtles

Suffolk County authorities say an amnesty event for people who own exotic animals they shouldn't have has brought in three alligators and 8 turtles.

The animals were turned in Saturday at the Holtsville Ecology Center.

Chief Roy Gross of the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says the three alligators were all about three feet long and healthy.

He says a snapping turtle that was turned in was sick, and a box turtle that was brought in was deformed.

The event allows people to turn in animals without being prosecuted.

In other years, animals including marmosets and a snake have been brought in.
