JFK Flight to Athens Diverted Over Smoky Odor in Cockpit

A Delta flight from JFK airport to Athens made an unscheduled stop at Manchester airport in England after a smoky odor was reported in the cockpit.

The flight was diverted to Manchester because it was the nearest airport, a spokesman for the airport said. Passengers disembarked normally and a Delta maintenance crew inspected the plane. They cleared it to take off again but the air traffic controllers strike in France kept it on the ground.

Passengers are being provided with hotel accomodation and the flight will take off at 0800 bst/0300et Friday morning.

There were 231 passengers and 12 crew on board the plane.
