Homeless Numbers Drop

Estimate released Wednesday

New York City's Department of Homeless Services says the number of homeless people on the streets has declined 30 percent from last year.

The agency released the results of its annual street homeless estimate on Wednesday.

The estimate puts 2,328 homeless people on streets, public spaces and subways this year. That's down from 3,306 last year and 4,395 in 2005.

Officials said the drop in street homelessness corresponds to an overhaul in the agency's approach. They cite new performance standards, expanded housing options, and better coordination with other city departments.

The good news about homeless numbers comes amid ongoing housing worries and market jitters due to the recession.
