A new study shows that a record number of people stayed overnight at New York City homeless shelters in January.
The Coalition for the Homeless says that number was nearly 54,000 people.
In its annual report, the advocacy group found the number of newly homeless families entering the system rose 12 percent. It says the number of homeless children rose by 8 percent and single adults by 5 percent.
The average stay for families with children was 14.5 months, another record.
The coalition has praised Mayor de Blasio's emphasis on building more affordable housing. Its executive director, Mary Brosnahan, tells The New York Times "the focus on housing is going to turn the tide."
The mayor's office tells the Times it looks forward to working with the coalition.
