Van Hits Man Walking on Bronx Street, Flings Him Into Air, Drives Off: Cops

A light-colored van fled the scene after hitting a pedestrian in the Bronx so forcefully Tuesday that the 65-year-old victim was flung into the air and landed on another vehicle, authorities said.

Police say the man was walking across Bronxdale Avenue near Barnes Avenue shortly after 9 p.m. when the van, moving eastbound on Bronxdale Avenue, hit him. The impact sent the man airborne and into a dark green Honda Odyssey traveling westbound on Bronxdale Avenue, police said.

"When it stopped, it hit him. Boom! Loud smack," witness Justin Lopez told NBC 4 New York. "I knew it automatically he was dead."

The van driver who hit the man drove off, while the Honda driver remained at the scene.

The identity of the victim has not been released.
