13 Reputed Long Island Gang Members Arrested

Law enforcement officials on Long Island say they've dealt a "major blow" to a violent Hempstead street gang, arresting more than a dozen members on a variety of charges.

Thirteen reputed members of the Salvadorians With Pride gang were charged in a 49-count indictment that includes some offenses punishable by a potential sentence of life in prison.

Prosecutors say the gang feuded with rival gangs such as Vatos Locos, MS-13 and Latin Pride. Between May and November, the indicted members have been accused of carrying out numerous assaults, a hammer attack, five shootings and a stabbing.

Two of the men charged are considered "original gangsters," or top gang members who give orders to subordinates.

Acting Nassau Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter says bringing the men to justice was "of the utmost importance."
