Buffalo Man Pleads Guilty in Hatchet Attack on Girlfriend

Prosecutors say a 50-year-old Buffalo man has pleaded guilty to charges related to a hatchet attack on his girlfriend and an assault on her 11-year-old daughter.

The Erie County district attorney's office on Friday said that David Wingate pleaded guilty to first- and second-degree assault charges related to the Sept. 1 attack.

Prosecutors say Wingate attacked his girlfriend with a hatchet and two kitchen knives and also attacked the girl. The woman suffered stab wounds, a wrist fracture and nerve damage.

Authorities believe Wingate wanted to steal money from the girl to pay off a drug debt.

Wingate, who was previously imprisoned on manslaughter charges, faces up to 32 years in prison when he is sentenced on Nov. 17.
