Girl is Merry Riding Carousel She Helped Save

A Long Island girl's three-year crusade to revive a 1912 carousel has come to a merry end.

Eleven-year-old Rachel Obergh rode atop Penny the pony at Nunley's Carousel in East Garden City on its first day in service in 14 years. She said that Saturday's ride was "really exciting'' and that she had ``fun going up and down.''

The Wantagh girl began crusading for the carousel's comeback in 2006.

Generations of youngsters rode the carousel from 1940 to 1995 at the now-shuttered Nunley's Amusement Park in Baldwin. It sat in a county warehouse until Rachel decided to undertake an effort to restore it.

She founded a charity called Pennies for Ponies and raised $91,000 toward the restoration cost.

The carousel is slated to open to the public May 2.
