Six families are displaced after a three-alarm fire tore through their homes in Jersey City, N.J., early Monday, authorities said.

The Red Cross said it is assisting a total of 17 people in those families following the 5:30 a.m. blaze on Bergen Avenue.

Intense flames roared from the roof of at least one multi-story home, but multiple homes were damaged. Firefighters had the blaze under control within about an hour.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
