More Than a Million Doses of Fentanyl Headed From Hong Kong to Long Island Seized: Cops

What to Know

  • 725 grams of fentanyl were headed to a home on Long Island from Hong Kong, authorities say
  • Police arrested three men after searching a home and seizing the drug Friday
  • Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid up to 50 times stronger than heroin

Authorities seized a large amount of fentanyl en route to Long Island and arrested three men after one of them allegedly released a pit bull on detectives serving a search warrant, police say.

Two postal packages containing the fentanyl arrived at Kennedy Airport and were destined for a home on Edwards Road in Mastic Beach, according to police.

During a search of the home Friday afternoon, detectives encountered Thomas Moore, 41, who police say released a pit bull that charged at detectives. The detectives fired two rounds and hit the dog; it was later treated at a local animal hospital.

In all, 725 grams of the opioid fentanyl was allegedly seized during the search of the home. Authorities also seized $7,400 in cash and numerous 9 mm rounds, according to police.

Moore and two other men — Corey Robinson, 24, and Daequane Rickenbacker, 25, were arrested.

Robinson was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance; Moore was charged with obstructing government administration; and Rickenbacker was charged with loitering.

All three men were scheduled to be arraigned Saturday in Central Islip. It wasn’t immediately known if they had attorneys.

A number of local and federal agencies took part in the investigation, including Suffolk County Narcotics, the NYPD, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Homeland Security Investigations and the U.S. Postal Service.
