Father Sentenced to 12 Years in DWI Crash That Killed His Baby Girl

Authorities said Jose Escobar had a blood alcohol level three times over the legal limit

A Long Island man involved in a drunken driving crash that killed his 10-month-old daughter has been sentenced to up to 12 years in prison.

Jose Escobar of Westbury was sentenced Tuesday in Suffolk County Court in Riverhead. He previously pleaded guilty to charges including manslaughter and aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child.

Authorities say the 30-year-old man had a blood-alcohol reading three times over the legal limit when he crashed in Brentwood last July.

His car went airborne on the Long Island Expressway's service road and crashed into the side of a convenience store.

Escobar's 10-month-old daughter, Helen, later died of her injuries.

Escobar and his pregnant wife also were injured.

The mother, who gave birth to a healthy boy after the crash, did not attend the sentencing.
