New York officials say their crackdown on repeat drunken drivers through new rules imposed last September has resulted in 3,164 potentially dangerous motorists being kept off the state's roadways.
Since then, the Department of Motor Vehicles says it has reviewed 3,891 applications for relicensing from individuals with more than two alcohol- or drug-related driving offenses on their record, with 1,658 permanently denied relicensing and some 1,500 others denied relicensing for another five years.
Another 699 drivers were relicensed but required to use an ignition interlock to ensure that they do not drive drunk and got restricted licenses to limit their driving to work commutes and similar travel.
