The Nassau County Police Department is investigating a complaint from County Executive Ed Mangano that he's been impersonated in a sexually suggestive text message.
Mangano said Sunday that "words alone cannot express the depth of my anger" over the situation.
"I am outraged at this smear attempt and will take legal action against the sick individual who has sought to assassinate my character and hurt my family," he said.
Mangano said his staff first found out about the messages in early February, when a public relations consultant said she had gotten a call from a media outlet asking about a sexual text message that appeared to be between her and an "Ed M."
The woman, Karin Caro, denied having ever made or seen the message.
Caro issued a statement through her attorney saying she had never communicated with Mangano and didn't even have his cellphone number. She said she had a professional relationship with him through her public relations firm.
"To be clear, the alleged text messages and tweets are fabricated, false and never happened," read the statement.
The police department says its intelligence unit and electronics squad are looking into it.
