Car Hits Construction Worker, Lands Completely in Hole

A driver struck a construction worker on Staten Island, breaking both of his legs, police said. Then the car fell on its side in a hole in the road.

The NYPD said the driver had been drinking before he hit the construction worker on Hylan Boulevard in the Midland Beach neighborhood.

Video from the scene showed the car fell into a hole in the ground apparently dug by construction workers.

The 37-year-old construction worker was taken to Staten Island University North Hospital with two broken legs, police said, adding that doctors were working to save his foot.

Keith Hayes, 28, of Staten Island, was taken into custody where he failed a sobriety test, police said. He allegedly tested nearly double the legal limit.

He was charged with reckless driving, driving while intoxicated and vehicular assault.

It wasn't clear whether Hayes had an attorney.
