2-Year-Old Girl Found Left Alone on School Bus

Police arrested the driver

A bus driver has been arrested for allegedly leaving a 2-year-old girl alone on a parked school bus in Queens Thursday morning.

Ana Garcia, 62, was charged with failure to exercise control of a minor. It wasn't known if she had an attorney.

Police said a nearby Con Edison worker noticed the little girl alone inside the unattended private school bus in Elmhurst at about 9 a.m. and called 911. Responding officers broke into the bus and brought out the child, who was reunited with her mother at a local precinct.

Police said Garcia had apparently dropped off the other children and parked the bus on Queens street, leaving the toddler behind. Garcia then walked home.

Neighbors were alarmed to learn of the incident.

"Why would you leave the child behind without checking the bus? It's a routine, you're supposed to check the bus?," said Tommy Ramirez, a parent.

The girl was left unattended for about 15 minutes. She was said to be in good physical condition.

Investigation is ongoing.
