Booker Nixes Lt. Gov Run With Corzine

Cory Booker says he's more interested in continuing to serve as Newark's mayor than in running for lieutenant governor with incumbent Gov. Jon S. Corzine.

This year marks the first time New Jersey will have a lieutenant governor on the ballot.

In an interview in his office Friday, Booker said he'll serve at least one more term as mayor of New Jersey's largest city and would consider a third term.

Booker says Corzine has not asked him directly, but that local and national Democratic Party figures have approached him.

Booker says it would be “irresponsible'' of him to leave Newark when the city is beginning to show signs of progress such as a steep drop in homicides and an increase in business investment.
