Proposed 1,066-Foot-Tall Tower Would Be Brooklyn's Tallest Skyscraper: Reports

Plans for a towering skyscraper that would be nearly twice the height of Brooklyn’s current tallest have been filed by developers, according to reports. If completed, it would be the outer borough's tallest.

Developers JDS Development Group and the Cherit Group submitted plans for the building in recent weeks. The plan was approved by Brooklyn Community Board 2, 11 to 0, Wednesday night — but it still has to go through the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission because it incorporates an NYC landmark.

If built, the 73-story tower would be 1,066 tall, soaring over the rest of downtown Brooklyn at a height only seen in skyscraper-heavy Manhattan up until this point, the New York Times reported

“We’re really excited to give Brooklyn a building that isn’t bashful, that isn’t shy,” Michael Stern, the founder and managing partner of JDS, said in a statement.

The building would be built on top of and would incorporate the Brooklyn Dime Savings Bank, which is a New York City landmark. The bank was purchased by developers in December and would be partially demolished as part of the plan, according to the Times.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission will have to approve alterations to the bank, and a hearing before the commission is scheduled for March 15.

The proposal is likely to face resistance from those who dislike the incorporation of the landmark and also from those who oppose the tower's lofty height.

SHoP Architects, the firm that drew up plans for the skyscraper, is probably most known for designing Barclays Center, an arena just a few blocks south of the tower’s proposed site at 9 DeKalb Ave.

The tallest building in Brooklyn is currently Avalon Willoughby West, a residential high-rise that’s under construction on Willoughby Street. It’s slated to be finished this year and will be 596 feet tall upon completion.

The loftiest building in the outer boroughs is the Citigroup Building in Long Island City. It’s 673 feet tall and was completed in 1990.

The tallest building in the city — and in the western hemisphere — is One World Trade Center, which is 1,792 feet tall.
