Knife-Wielding Man Stabs Tourist Near Central Park: Witnesses, Police

A man was injured in a stabbing across the street from Central Park on Sunday afternoon, authorities say.

The 23-year-old man was stabbed shortly before 1:20 p.m. at Central Park South and Columbus Circle, near food vendors and the subway.

Witnesses say the attack appeared unprovoked and completely random, and that the man had a small knife and appeared unstable. Police were still searching the area for him hours later.

"There was a tourist guy inside this area and the homeless guy came around him and hit him in his back and got away," said food vendor Ahmed Mahar.

Police haven't confirmed that the victim was a tourist or that the attacker was a homeless man.

After the man was stabbed, Mahar ran over to help. He said he gave the man towels to stop the bleeding.

The victim was taken to Cornell Medical Center in stable condition. He is expected to survive his injuries.
