The deadline has arrived for prosecutors to announce whether they've obtained an indictment against a North Carolina woman accused of snatching a newborn from a New York hospital more than two decades ago.
Prosecutors were scheduled to announce Monday whether a grand jury has returned an indictment against Ann Pettway. She's been held without bail after her arrest on charges that she kidnapped Carlina White from Harlem Hospital in August 1987.
White is now 23 years old and had a joyous reuninion with her birth parents in New York.
Prosecutors and her lawyers could agree to postpone the date when an indictment is due. That frequently occurs in prosecutions when there is a chance the case can be resolved without a trial.
The FBI said the Raleigh, N.C., woman took the baby after her own efforts at childbearing failed.
