Fat Chance: New Yorkers Oppose “Obesity Tax”

A new poll shows that New York voters overwhelmingly oppose Governor David Paterson's proposed "obesity tax" on non-diet soda and other sugary drinks.

The Quinnipiac University poll released this week finds that by a margin of 60 percent to 37 percent, New Yorkers don't believe the tax should be charged. Even 58 percent of those who said they prefer diet soft drinks over regular sodas also said they oppose the tax.

Fifty-four percent of Democrats polled said they oppose the tax, while 72 percent of Republicans said they're against it, and 59 percent of independent voters said they oppose the tax.
