Survey: New Yorkers Happy With Fire, Police Protection

But asked about social services, approval rating drops

Mayor Michael Bloomberg says he learned in the private sector that you can never have too much information about what the customer wants.

That's why New York City conducted a survey about municipal services.

The findings were released Wednesday.

Eighty-five percent of New Yorkers say police and fire protection services are excellent, good or fair.

Among public school parents, 85 percent say the schools are excellent, good or fair.

But asked about social services like preventing homelessness and providing youth employment, just 58 percent said the city is doing an excellent, good or fair job.

The survey was mailed to 136,642 randomly selected households. Of those, 24,339 questionnaires were completed.
