June 21: The Day of 2,500 Food-Truck Freebies

Food trucks might be getting run off by brick-and-mortars here and there, but they’re also becoming a marketing tool. Earlier this week we got a pitch announcing that “several high-end food trucks” (including the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck and Vincent’s Pizza) will be parked outside of the Henry Street Settlement starting at 6:30 p.m. before performances of “John Kelly’s Paved Paradise Redux: The Art of Joni Mitchell.”

If that’s a little too highbrow for you, check this out — Fox Searchlight is promoting its forthcoming romantic comedy, (500) Days of Summer, by having trucks like Cupcake Stop and the Treats Truck (plus the Shake Shack!) each give away 500 items on June 21, the first day of summer. It’s kind of a brilliant marketing plan, since the food blogs are bound to document the lines (just look at Eater’s photos of the queue at Pret A Manger during their giveaway yesterday). Here’s the official list of when and where the trucks will be in action, and what they’ll be handing out.
