Starting today and running through Sept. 10, avant-garde composer John Morton's "sonic collage," the Sound Tunnel, is aimed at giving pedestrians a concentrated experience of the "sonic landscape" of the park. Here's how the Parks Department folks describe this free, interactive treat:
Beginning every half-hour with the ringing of the Delacorte chimes, this 20-minute, 6-speaker sound installation incorporates field recordings made in Central Park over the last year. Using computer technology, a randomly generated selection of ambient sounds such as horses clopping, baseball games, birds, and chime tunes are woven together to form ever-changing compositions that echo through the cavernous tunnel.
Sounds weird-slash-awesome! We look forward to this installation delighting New Yorkers and confusing tourists. Listen to a small preview of what's in store for your ears here.
