A First Look at 2009: Shrimp Market Opens 1/5

Far be it from us to keep the news of the opening of the first New York City Shrimp Market from you. The big day is Monday, January 5th, 2009and what a way to set the tone for 2009, indeed! Especially for those who say Manhattan gets all the good shrimp, do read on:

Dear Eater Editors,

Shrimp Market is opening a new location in the Queens Center Mall on January 5th. I was hoping you could recognize how this opening would really highlight the movement towards healthy food (all fresh shrimp dishes,) in what is generally considered a non-healthy setting (the mall.) The new location is very modern looking and most importantly without compromising freshness, the dishes are mostly under $10...[I] have attached the release below...

GOURMET SHRIMP COMES TO FAST FOOD Shrimp Market aims to revolutionize mall dining with delicious, high-quality dishes prepared to order

QUEENS, NY - DECEMBER 29, 2008 – Americans’ long-time love affair with shrimp has always gone unrequited in the quick-serve arena – until now.

On January 5, 2008 Shrimp Market, a nearly two-year-old chain will open a location in the Queens Center Mall (Queens, New York.) As it does in its many other locations, Shrimp Market will stun mall-goers with mouth-watering dishes like Shrimp Carbonara, Coconut Shrimp, Shrimp Cocktail and Cajun Jambalaya Shrimp – all prepared to order, right before their eyes.

;Everyone loves shrimp, but until now it has always been a special-occasion treat, says Vanessa Abramowitz, Shrimp Market's President. We want high-quality, delicious shrimp to be accessible to everyone every day of the week.br />
Shrimp Market's cooked-to-order menu is rich in variety, with fried, grilled, American, Italian and Asian dishes, most priced at just $7. There is also a selection of sautéed vegetables and packaged salads, and shrimp is available by the pound for takeout.

Shrimp Market maintains the highest standards imaginable when it comes to food safety, beginning with the decision to eschew franchising and operate its own restaurants. It even raises all of its shrimp on state-of-the-art farms in Colombia through parent company Cartagena Shrimp Co. Abramowitz's father, Salomon Finvarb, founded the $100 million-a-year firm in 1983, and today it produces 10,000 tons of shrimp annually.

Mall owners and shoppers alike love the uniqueness and quality of the gourmet shrimp concept, and sales have been through the roof. Customers love the health and nutritional benefits of shrimp, too, being low in fat, carbohydrates and calories and an excellent source of protein.

A look at the menu illustrates the concept’s sophistication and quality: Pasta entrees range from Linguini With Shrimp & Clams in Red Sauce to Shrimp Carbonara (Cavatappi pasta, crisp bacon, ripe tomatoes, garden peas, sautéed mushrooms in roasted garlic cream) and Shrimp Lo-Mein (crisp vegetables in soy-ginger sauce).

Rice entrees include Sweet & Sour Shrimp (fresh pineapple, onion and bell pepper in sweet & sour sauce), Cajun Jambalaya Shrimp (Andouille sausage, seared onions & bell peppers, in rich Creole tomato sauce) and Shrimp Fried Rice (Asian vegetables, fried rice, garlic, ginger & soy sauce).

There is also a tasty selection of sandwich wraps and rolls, including a New England Shrimp Roll (shrimp salad with onion, celery & seasoned dressing mounded on a soft roll) and Asian Shrimp Wrap (chilled shrimp, baby spinach & Asian vegetables in a spinach tortilla with sweet Thai dressing).

Desserts include All American Cheesecake, 3 Layer Chocolate Cake and Shrimp Market's Key Lime Pie. Imported and domestic beers and wine are also available in Florida.

Shrimp Market restaurants are up and running in Aventura and Miami in Florida, and Boston, Burlington, Peabody and Cambridge in Massachusetts. Additional locations are planned in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
