Is Brooklyn Bridge Park Being Put to Sleep?

Uh oh. Most of Brooklyn Bridge Park may be screwed. A press release just dropped into the inbox with a thud from a star studded cast of Brooklyn pols. Basically, they're saying the "current financial status" for the park will be revealed on Thursday. That status, as has been noted, is not good because all the development that would finance the park's operation is on hold. The good news: the first phase including Pier 1 and Part of Pier 6 "is expected to be open to the public by the end of the year." The bad news: Since the hotel and condos are toast, "No other public source for maintenance and operations expenses is available, and in these tough economic times, we do not believe these funds will come from government sources." Translation: the rest of the park could be an empty lot for years. There will be a public meeting on Thursday, but we wouldn't wager on a bright future. Maybe they'll truck in sand and call it Brooklyn Bridge Beach?
