8/28: Brooklyn Soul Festival

Soul greats blow the roof of Brooklyn’s Bell House at this badass two-day blowout

SOUL THING: For the Brooklyn Soul Festival – two days of old-school soul from young and old notables working in the genre today – Bell House has wrangled quite a lineup. Tonight’s kickoff features Barbara Lynn (“Soul Queen of the Gulf Coast”), Roscoe Robinson (“Baron Of Birmingham, Alabama”) and Hermon Hitson (“The Georgia Grinder himself!”) – with house band Eli “Paperboy” Reed and the True Loves. Expect to be transported to another place and time. 8PM.

FOLK-SOUL: As Brooklyn singer-songwriter Jonah Smith told HuffPo, “I feel like somehow, hopefully, the worlds of a John Prine, Malcolm Holcombe, or John Hiatt, and the worlds of Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, and Marvin Gaye are meshed into my music.” We couldn’t describe it any better. Smith electrifies Bowery Ballroom tonight as a release party for his new disc “Lights On” at 8PM.

PLASTICS: Settle in at the Sunshine Theater for a midnight showing of a brand-new print of Mike Nichols’ landmark film “The Graduate.” Anne Bancroft was no cougar, kids – she was sex on legs, with a cigarette. 12AM.
