Christie Brinkley's Best Friend Talks Divorce Settlement

Christie Brinkley gained sole custody of her kids on Thursday. And while she is undoubtedly happy for the end of her divorce nightmare, how exactly did her relationship with Peter Cook begin?

Following the court’s ruling yesterday, Access Hollywood’sBilly Bush spoke with Jill RappaportChristie’s best friend and the woman who introduced Christie to Peter in the first place.

“The only thing Christie Brinkley is guilty of is trusting too much,” Rappaport said during a radio interview on “The Billy Bush Show.”

When Billy reminded the “Today” show correspondent she was the one who first introduced the pair, Rappaport couldn’t do anything but laugh it off.

“Thank you for reminding me of that Billy. OK, I thought I liked you, can we please stop the interview now!” she joked. “You know what, we all make mistakes in life and needless to say, [matchmaking] is probably not my forte. I won’t be doing it anymore.”

With some of the salacious details that many expected were to be revealed once the custody trial began, many questioned why Brinkley had fought to keep matters public.

However, Rappaport said her best friend’s efforts were misinterpreted.

“Courts are always open. They kept saying she was fighting for an open court. She was not. He was fighting to keep it closed,” Rappaport explained. “The semantics are making her look bad and it’s not true. Christie didn’t want any special treatment.”

And while Cook argued for privacy to help protect the privacy of his children, Rappaport said it was too little, too late.

“I have to say if you are really doing it for your children, then you wouldn’t have done what you did in the first place,” she noted.

Rappaport, who is a seasoned entertainment reporter, admitted to being scared when she was called to testify in the trial.

“It’s the idea that if something is misconstrued in the slightest way…you could affect the lives of many people,” she said.

So now that a settlement has been reached and the trial is over, what is Brinkley’s mindset?

“I don’t think overjoyed is the right word,” Rappaport concluded. “It’s the death of a marriage…it’s the end of a major chapter in her (Brinkley’s) life and a very painful one.”
