Woman Overboard from Staten Island Ferry

NBCNewYork

A ferry ride ended tragically for a woman who either fell or jumped overboard, police said.

The incident happened shortly before 6 p.m. in the Upper Harbor by Governor's Island, authorities said. Passengers noticed the woman go into the water and immediately alerted the crew, which stopped the Guy Molinari ferry.

The coast guard rushed to pull the woman, who was in her 30s, from the water.

A police boat brought the woman to the Staten Island Ferry terminal, then transported her to a nearby hospital, where she died a short time later.

Police believe that she may have intentially jumped overboard.
