The civil rights leader said despite having different perspectives, he and Trump can agree on the way government should function

The Reverend Al Sharpton calls Trump's appointments a disaster. doesn't plan to be friendly with Donald Trump in the near future, but he does say the two can talk about ways to make government run more efficiently.

In a new interview with NBC 4 New York, the civil rights leader revealed the president-elect phoned him several days ago "out of nowhere," saying "Al, I know you marched and I know we don't really get along, but you understand me."

Sharpton said he made it clear the two are never going to be allies, but that they can agree on the way government should function.

"I think we'll have to work on him. I don't think we will be working with him," he said. "I think we can work on him setting a climate where he's going to have to make certain decisions that he may end up on the right side if we force it."

Sharpton added that Trump's cabinet choices are sending people the wrong message.

The Trump transition office did not respond to a request for comment Thursday afternoon.

Sharpton runs the National Action Network and is a talk-show host on MSNBC, which is owned by NBCUniversal, the parent company of this site.
