Volunteers Prepare Tax Returns Free for Some NYers

State and federal officials say low and middle income taxpayers can get free help filing this year's returns.

They say individuals and families with incomes of $51,000 or less are eligible for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

The IRS-sponsored program has 3,500 certified volunteers at locations around the state ready to help prepare state and federal returns.

Almost 200,000 returns were prepared by volunteers last year.

The volunteers are at 400 community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls and other locations, many of which require people to make an appointment.
