Truck Fire Shuts Down Upper Level of Verrazano Bridge

A truck erupted in flames after colliding with a car on the upper level of the Verrazano Bridge early Tuesday, forcing authorities to shut down that part of the span as the morning rush began.

The upper span was closed in both directions for a time as firefighters doused the flames.

The Brooklyn-bound lanes reopened shortly before 8 a.m. but the Staten Island-bound lanes remained closed.

The lower level was open. Drivers were advised to expect extensive delays.

It wasn't clear if anyone was hurt in the accident.

Chopper 4 showed a heavy emergency presence at the scene.
