Man, Sons Among 5 Who Plead Guilty to $2.5 Million Tax Refund Scam

Five Passaic residents, including a man and his two sons, have pleaded guilty to running a tax refund scam that federal prosecutors say ripped off the government for about $2.5 million.

The U.S. attorney's office says the scheme ran from 2009 to 2013.

The conspirators allegedly obtained Social Security numbers and other information from residents of Puerto Rico and elsewhere. The stolen identities were used to file bogus IRS income tax returns and generate refunds.

Pleading guilty Wednesday were 49-year-old Julio Concepcion; his sons, Angel Concepcion-Vasquez and Julio Concepcion-Vasquez; 67-year-old Jose Zapata and 24-year-old Romy Quezada. They will be sentenced in May.

Julio Concepcion pleaded guilty to theft of government funds and conspiracy. He also pleaded guilty to conspiracy stemming from a separate mortgage fraud scheme.

The others pleaded guilty to conspiracy.
