Radioactive Area of Queens Designated a Superfund Site

An industrial area of Queens with elevated levels of radioactivity has been designated a federal Superfund site.

The area, once the home of a company that processed radioactive thorium, is three-fourths of an acre in Ridgewood.

Judith Enck, the regional administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, made the announcement Thursday.

Enck says the radioactivity is no immediate threat to residents or workers in the area. The planning phase will take a couple of years.

The parcel includes an auto repair shop, a deli and other small businesses. A school and a day care center are nearby.

The EPA is researching to see if any existing business can be billed for the work.

Other federal Superfund sites in New York City are the Gowanus Canal and Newtown Creek.
