New Jersey Student Fractures Skull, Spine in Gym Accident

A student is expected to recover after fracturing his skull and spine in a gym accident before classes began at a northern New Jersey school.

Superintendent Beverly MacKay tells The Record newspaper the student at Indian Hills High School in Bergen County jumped off an 8-foot stack of mats and did not completely land on a thick mat on the floor Tuesday. The boy hit his head.

MacKay says the boy can move his arms and legs and does not have any spinal cord injuries.

The stack of mats are used for cheerleading practice.
