State Capitol to Go Dark for Earth Hour

The state Capitol building in Albany will go dark for an hour tonight along with landmarks around the globe as part of the Earth Hour event supporting action on climate change.

The lights will go off from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.

This marks the third year of the event, which attracted more than 80 million participants in the U.S. last year and nearly a billion people around the world.

Lights dimmed on such icons as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Sydney's Opera House, the Great Pyramids of Gaza and New York's Empire State Building.

Governor Paterson said his administration will release a Climate Action Plan this fall that will provide the roadmap for reducing greenhouse gas pollution 80 percent below 1990 levels by the year 2050.
