Homeowner Rescues Driver Who Crashes SUV Into Backyard Pool: Police

A Long Island homeowner dove to the rescue of an elderly driver who crashed his SUV into the man's backyard pool Monday afternoon, police say.

The 79-year-old driver was in his 2010 Acura SUV in the parking lot of Mayfair Foot Care on Harned Road in Commack when he apparently stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake, according to Suffolk police.

The SUV broke through a fence into the backyard of 32-year-old John Bacchi's home on Smith Lane, and went straight into the deep end of an in-ground pool there, police said.

Bacchi, who was in the backyard at the time, jumped into the pool and tried to get the driver out.

"He was a little out of it," said Bacchi. "I was trying to get him to roll the window down. I couldn't get the window down, I couldn't get the door open."

Bacchi smashed the window open and rescued the driver.

The driver was taken to Huntington Hospital to be evaluated.

Bacchi and his wife, who was also in the yard at the time of the crash, were not hurt.

It's not clear what caused the driver to crash. Police are investigating.
