18-Year-Old Pleads Not Guilty in Long Island Teen's Murder

Police say 18-year-old Lauren Daverin's body was found at a footbridge that crosses over Merrick Road in Rockville Center

An 18-year-old man has pleaded not guilty in the murder of a teenage woman found fatally strangled by a Long Island footbridge.

Maxwell Sherman was arraigned Sunday on a second-degree charge in the death of Lauren Daverin, also 18.

The suspect, who lives in Long Beach, is being held without bail pending his next court appearance on Aug. 28. His attorney's name was not immediately available.

Police say Daverin was found Thursday by friends near the footbridge over Merrick Road in Rockville Center.

Nassau County police would not say whether the Lynbrook woman knew her attacker or whether she was killed at random.

Friends of the Lynbrook woman have described Daverin as a loving person with many friends.

"She was just a great person," Emily Westermann said. "She loved everybody, everybody loved her. She had a whole bunch of friends. I don't know why this happened to her, how this happened to her, but she didn't deserve that."
