Pedestrian Struck, Killed by Postal Service Tractor-Trailer on Long Island Expressway: Police

A pedestrian has died after being hit by a U.S. Postal Service tractor-trailer Wednesday night on the Long Island Expressway, according to police.

The crash happened just past exit 49 on the highway’s westbound lanes at about 10:30 p.m. in Melville.

Police say 52-year-old Stephen Puleo was walking west on the highway when he was hit by the tractor trailer.

The 62-year-old driver, Russell Davenport of Northport, remained on the scene and tried to assist the victim, police say.

Investigators conducted a safety check of the tractor trailer on scene, but the cause of the crash was not immediately known.
