Authorities say an off-duty officer for a northern New Jersey police department exchanged gunfire with another man over his daughter's stolen SUV.
NJ.com reports the 39-year-old Irvington officer was in Newark around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday when he saw someone driving his daughter's stolen Jeep.
Prosecutors say the vehicle's occupants jumped out and took off when the officer pulled his personal car over near the vehicle. Investigators say a man approached the officer as he was checking on the Jeep and the two exchanged gunfire.
No one was injured in the shooting.
Prosecutors didn't immediately identify either person.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating.
