Hundreds of Newark students crowded city streets to protest the public school administration.
The students marched from City Hall toward McCarter Highway on Friday as part of a walk out that began about noon.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said in a statement the students were exercising their First Amendment and that they understood they're not getting the education they deserve.
Baraka says the district is in chaos.
A message to the Newark Public Schools was not immediately returned.
The Newark Students Union is a student group that says its goals include ensuring a quality education.
Gov. Chris Christie appointed Cami Anderson superintendent in 2011. Since then parents students have criticized her One Newark plan, which includes a universal enrollment scheme.
