A person was killed in a shooting in Newark early Tuesday, prosecutors say.
Police were sent to 343 Avon Ave. shortly after midnight, where they found the victim, Essex County prosecutors say. Other details are unknown at this time.
It’s not clear if any arrests have been made.
It was the second fatal shooting in less than 8 hours in the city. Monday afternoon two people were killed and another was injured in a crash after gunfire erupted at Irvine Turner Boulevard and Spruce Street.
Last year, Newark topped 100 homicides for the first time since 2007, according to police department statistics. Mayor Luis Quintana and law enforcement officials announced in January they were hiring 100 police officers to combat the rising violent crime rate.
