Police say the father of a 5-year-old Bronx boy who accidentally shot himself in the arm has been arrested on gun and child endangerment charges.

Denny Pantoja, 33, was charged Friday with criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child. Authorities said the boy was hospitalized in stable condition after accidentally shooting himself in the shoulder while playing with the gun.

The boy shot himself at about 10:30 a.m. in the Morrisania section of the Bronx. The father was arrested shortly before 9 p.m.

Police say the boy was taken to the hospital after his father's vehicle was pulled over when police officers noticed him talking on a cell phone. Police say the father first claimed the boy was shot in a robbery.
